President Bola Tinubu, represented by Vice President Kashim Shettima, announced the designation of April 7 as National Police Day during the inaugural Nigeria Police Awards and Commendations ceremony at the Transcorp Hilton, Abuja, on Monday night, April 15.

During the Nigeria Police Awards and Commendations ceremony, Vice President Shettima, delivering President Tinubu’s speech titled “Courage Under Fire: A Bouquet for Our Police Force,” emphasized the resilience of citizens amidst security challenges.

He acknowledged the strain on Nigeria’s security framework and commended the enduring commitment of the police force in safeguarding lives and livelihoods despite these challenges.

Furthermore, Vice President Shettima reiterated the administration’s firm commitment to reforming the Nigeria Police Force into a contemporary, proficient, and transparent institution reflective of the nation’s aspirations and values.

As part of the comprehensive reforms aimed at revitalizing the police force, Vice President Shettima outlined initiatives such as increased investment in training and capacity-building. Recognizing the importance of equipping officers with the necessary skills for modern policing, he emphasized the imperative of engaging both men and women of the force in rigorous training programs.

Furthermore, Vice President Shettima revealed that the Federal Government had sanctioned the establishment of the first week of April as Police Week, with the last day designated as National Police Day. This decision underscores the administration’s commitment to honoring and recognizing the invaluable contributions of the police force to the nation’s security and stability.

In adherence to this tradition of acknowledging the vital role of the Police Force, the adoption of Police Week serves as a platform to celebrate and commemorate the dedication and sacrifices made by law enforcement officers across the country in upholding law and order.
