Sixteen Travelers Perish in Enugu Road Accident, Burnt Beyond Recognition

A tragic incident unfolded on Tuesday, April 30, along the Enugu/Opi/Nsukka Road in Enugu state, as six travelers lost their lives in a fatal motor accident. Among the victims were fourteen males and two females, all of whom perished in the accident and were burnt beyond recognition. The mishap involved an 18-seater white-colored Toyota Hummer bus bearing a Bauchi State commercial registration number DAS 215 XA, marked with the inscription “Masha Allah.” 

Reportedly, the bus, allegedly driven at high speed, veered out of control and crashed into the fence of Maduka University along the route, resulting in the tragic loss of lives. The identities of the victims remain undisclosed as authorities continue to investigate the circumstances surrounding the devastating accident.

Following a preliminary investigation conducted by the police, it was determined that the vehicle tragically erupted into flames, resulting in the burning of the sixteen deceased individuals beyond recognition. Subsequently, the bodies were transported to the hospital where they were confirmed dead. 

However, amidst the tragedy, two other passengers were fortunate enough to be rescued alive and promptly taken to the hospital for urgent medical attention, thanks to the swift response of police officers, soldiers, and compassionate members of the public who rushed to the scene.

The initial inquiry unveiled that the vehicle, laden with edible vegetables, assorted food items, and passengers’ belongings, was en route from the Enugu region towards Nsukka. However, specific details regarding the vehicle’s departure point and final destination remain undisclosed. Nevertheless, authorities have recovered the items from the accident site and are continuing their investigation into the circumstances surrounding the devastating incident.

The command’s spokesperson, DSP Daniel Ndukwe, confirmed the incident, stating that the Commissioner of Police, CP Kanayo Uzuegbu, accompanied by officials from the Federal Road Safety Corps, has visited the scene to evaluate the situation. 

Uzuegbu expressed his condolences, describing the accident and the resulting tragedy as deeply sorrowful. He extended sympathies to the families, friends, and associates of the deceased who are yet to be located.
