Property Owners Along Lagos-Calabar Road to Receive N2.75 Billion Compensation

Property owners impacted by the demolition activities conducted to create space for the construction of the Lagos-Calabar Coaster Highway will receive a total compensation of N2.75 billion from the Federal Government. The announcement was made by the Minister of Works, Dave Umahi, during the unveiling of the new design routes for the 700-kilometer project in Lagos on May 1st.

Umahi revealed that the compensation package is part of the government’s efforts to ensure fair treatment for property owners affected by the project. The new design routes signify progress in the development of the extensive highway project, which aims to enhance transportation infrastructure and connectivity along the Lagos-Calabar corridor.

At a ceremony organized by the Federal Ministry of Works, the Minister disclosed that the initial group of property owners affected by the construction received their compensation. This step underscores the government’s commitment to addressing the concerns of those impacted by the project. The highway project aims to establish a vital link between Lagos and Cross River, traversing the coastal states of Ogun, Ondo, Delta, Bayelsa, Rivers, and Akwa Ibom before reaching its destination in Cross River.

Despite its significant infrastructural benefits, the project has not been without controversy. Particularly contentious was the demolition of the Landmark Beach Resort, valued at $200 million, to clear space for the highway’s right of way. This action has sparked debate and criticism, especially given the estimated cost of the entire project, which stands at N15 trillion for the federal government.
