National Security Agency (NSA) Directs Implementation of Cybercrime Legislation

Mallam Nuhu Ribadu, the National Security Adviser (NSA), has instructed all law enforcement agencies, regulators, businesses, and relevant stakeholders to initiate the comprehensive enforcement of the Cybercrimes (Prohibition, Prevention, etc) Amendment Act of 2024.

Zakari Mijinyawa, the Head of Strategic Communications Office at the NSA, conveyed Ribadu’s directive in a statement. Ribadu emphasized that all necessary measures for the full operationalization and enforcement of the Cybercrimes Law have been undertaken.

Consequently, the NSA announced that a 0.5 percent levy will be imposed on all electronic transactions conducted by businesses outlined in the Second Schedule of the Cybercrimes Act. This levy will be collected and channeled into the National Cybercrime Fund.

On July 6, 2022, Nigeria joined 66 other nations in signing and ratifying the Budapest Convention on Cybercrime. This move, made under section 41(2) (a) of the Cybercrime Act 2015, aimed to bolster international collaboration and establish a unified platform with procedural tools for the advancement of cybersecurity and safety in cyberspace.
