Bus Plunges Off Bridge in Mali, Resulting in 31 Fatalities

In Mali, tragedy struck on Tuesday as a bus en route to Burkina Faso veered off a bridge in the southeastern region of the country, resulting in the loss of 31 lives and leaving 10 others injured, according to the transport ministry. The devastating accident occurred at approximately 5:00 pm (1700 GMT) while the bus was crossing the Bagoe river.

The mishap underscores the dangers faced by travelers on the region’s roadways and highlights the urgent need for improved transportation infrastructure and safety measures to prevent such tragedies in the future.

“A bus… that was leaving Kenieba commune for Burkina Faso tipped off a bridge. The likely cause is the driver losing control of the vehicle,” the ministry said in a statement.

Automobile accidents are frequent in Mali, where many roads and highways as well as vehicles are in poor condition.

Earlier this month, 15 people were killed and 46 injured when a bus heading toward the capital Bamako collided with a truck in central Mali.
